South Bay Energy Reviews: Be An Energy Efficient Pet Owner

Pet owners tend to spoil their pets. Among the more visible expenses associated with having pets are pet food, veterinary care, and treats. However, there are hidden expenses that come with pet ownership, and one of the biggest drains on pet owners is energy costs.

How do pet owners waste money on energy? Here are ways you might be wasting energy on your pets, and how to avoid doing them.

1. Too much heating/cooling. Pet owners often leave the air conditioning or heater switched on while they’re away, believing that their pets might feel too warm or too cold. However, unless it’s the middle of winter, there is no need to turn up the thermostat too high. In the same manner, some pet owners don’t turn off the ceiling fan while leaving the house during summer. Cats and dogs do not have sweat glands and leaving the electric fan turned on won’t help pets keep cool. Leave them plenty of cold water to drink instead.

2. Installing a low-quality pet door. Heat could escape through a pet door that doesn’t swing back in to place. Replace it with one that has magnetic strips on the side so that it will stay closed when not in use. Add a door sweep and weather stripping to keep warm air indoors.

3. Keeping the lights and TV turned on. Many pet owners think their pets are afraid of the dark or don’t like feeling alone, so they keep the lights and TV turned on at night. However, this might do more harm than good – keeping the lights on at night might disturb pets’ sleeping patterns and turning on the TV won’t have any effect on pets since they don’t watch TV in the first place. A better alternative would be to leave their favorite toys out for them to enjoy.
